Time & Tide was initiated in 1996 to document the lives of the netters and has continued every year since then.

In the intervening period many changes have taken place. The big salmon netting companies have ceased their operations and sold their licences to individual fishermen. The season is shorter and fewer men are employed. This has impacted physically on the landscape; bothies and equipment have fallen into disrepair and some sites have been abandoned altogether to be reclaimed by the sea.

The photographs show not only the changes endured by individual fishermen but also the alterations to the physical environment. This is not a sentimental journey through a changing world, however, but an examination of the aesthetic qualities of change and how work relates to its surroundings. The aim is that these photographs will endure not only as documentary evidence but also to convey a sense of form, shape and rhythm which will enhance the viewer’s perception of the subject.
